One week to go …

In just one week we head off on our next adventure … exploring the wonders of China. We have carefully planned this trip … poring over brochures, online itineraries, scouring GetYourGuide and TripAdvisor to curate the perfect itinerary for us.

Over 2 weeks we will explore Beijing … seeing the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the Temple of Heaven and walk the Great Wall. We will take bullet trains to Xi’an to see the Terracotta Warriors and the ancient walled city and then on to Chengdu to visit the People’s Park, Matchmakers Corner and the Pandas! Then on to Chongqing where we will join a 3 night cruise on the Yangtze River with day trips to the Fengdu Ghost City and the White Emperor City as we meander our way towards the Three Gorges. We then say goodbye to our cruise boat and head to the mountains of Zhangjiajie, home to the Bailong Elevator (built into the mountain and descending/ascending 320 metres. A few mountain walks, a boat cruise on a lake, a cable car ride and a glass bridge … which may indeed freak Ian out! And finally on to Shanghai where we will explore the Old Town, the Yu Gardens, the Bund and another river cruise. We will end our stay in China with a visit to Zhujiajiao, an ancient water village … one of many “Venice of the East” locations around the world!

And because we are us … and we never want to pass up the chance for a little more adventure … we will have 2 nights in Singapore en route home. A chance to begin exploring this city which we have passed through many times but only once before did we leave the airport!

So … if you would like to join us again you are more than welcome. I will be blogging every day …  so buckle up, get your virtual passport ready … because soon we will be away again!

Day 13 - And we thought yesterday’s mountains were amazing

Today was our last day in Zhangjiajie so we needed to be up early to pack our cases, have breakfast, checkout, and meet Kaia (yes I spelt it incorrectly yesterday) at 7.30 in the lobby.  We were there early ... (well come on you aren't really surprised by that are you?). So we hopped straight into the minivan when our driver arrived.  Our first stop today was to visit the Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge. This was about a 20 minute drive from our hotel so we sat back to enjoy the view.  The bridge was opened in 2016 and is 430 metres long and 6 metres wide. It has massive suspension cables holding it up ... and Kaia told us it had been earthquake tested and buses had driven over it.  The bridge is 300 metres above the ground  ... a deep ravine between two mountain cliffs in the National Forest Park. We arrived at the bridge, popped our protective booties on and then began the walk over (and back). Ian is terrified of heights so he focussed on just crossing the bridge .....

Day 11 - Farewell MV Victoria Jenna

Today was our last boat day ... well technically our last breakfast and then we had to leave the boat! Last night we packed our bags and dropped them down to reception where they would be transferred for us to this morning’s final destination where we would meet our afternoon guide and driver to take us to Zhangjiajie.  This morning though we ate our last meal, said a fond farewell to Hilda our dining room attendant and went down to meet up with our tour group for the morning excursion. We had been told that we wouldn't have time to do the "extra" excursion we really wanted to do ... but Britney (the onboard Wendy Wu representative) and Steven the River Guide on the boat made some phone calls on our behalf and so we were able to go!   The extra bit of the tour was to go on a tourist boat that would travel on the ship lift to navigate the changing water levels of to the Three Gorges Dam. Day 9 - On board the Victoria Jenna

Last night I left you on board the bus that was taking us to the port of Fengdu to join our Yangtze cruise on the Victoria Jenna. It was a two hour bus ride (with a brief stop for the Happy Room aka toilet along the way). As we neared the end of our journey the heavens opened and we were blessed with a torrential storm. Heavy rain and lightning that lit up the sky made for an interesting final half hour. Even more so when we arrived at the port with water flooding the road (think monsoonal rain and you are on the right track).  Staff from our boat were on hand to provide us with rain ponchos and large tarps to cover our bags. As we stepped off the bus … take a leap of faith to cross the flooded gutter … we headed towards the port. Descending over 100 flooded stairs (waterfall) huddled in our cheap plastic coats with our hand luggage held close to our chests, with more staff with torches and umbrellas lining the stairs … shouting “watch the step … watch the step…”.
